Skin is the largest organ of the human body. It not only protects our inner health, but also serves as a solid physical barrier to resist the invasion of the external environment. During the human life cycle, skin shows significant differences at different ages. Skin aging is a complex process that includes both intrinsic aging that occurs naturally over time and is also affected by external environmental factors such as air pollution, smoking, poor nutrition, and ultraviolet radiation. As we age, cellular damage accumulates, causing the skin to gradually become thinner, sagging, and wrinkled. In addition, with aging, multiple factors such as mitochondrial damage, inflammatory response, and increased ROS lead to a decrease in cell repair ability, increasing oxidative stress, thereby accelerating skin aging.
Epidermis: The skin barrier function is damaged, mainly manifested by increased penetration of foreign substances, increased water loss through the epidermis, and loss of nutrients, which leads to dry and itchy skin, causing various skin problems and accelerating the process of skin aging.
Basement membrane: After aging, the wavy mosaic structure will gradually flatten, thin or even break, the true epidermis contact area will decrease, normal material exchange and signal transmission will not be possible, the epidermis tends to relax, and wrinkles will form.
Dermis: The degradation rate of structural proteins such as collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans in the dermis is accelerated, and the regeneration rate is reduced, causing the skin to gradually become loose and inelastic.
